Mr. Anastasiadis' Year of Growth Through the AUSL Residency Training Year 2012-2013

Introduction

This website will give you an insight of what it is like for one resident teacher to be challenged, both academically and in the field of education, through the Academy for Urban School Leadership's Teacher Residency Program.

Howe School of Excellence

Howe School of Excellence is where I spent my 2012-2013 year of teaching. Howe is located in the Austin neighborhood on the West side of Chicago, and is currently in their fifth year of the turnaround process. Howe saw immediate success early on in their mission of turning around the school as they saw more and more students meeting and/or exceeding on the ISAT exam for the first three years.

In their fourth year, Howe saw a small dip in state test scores, and that is why at the beginning of this year they wanted to refocus their attention to what work well in year one, and that was sweating the small details and putting in place a high standard of excellence with their non-negotiable expectations for students and staff. All hands on deck was made a very high point earlier on in the year and maintained through out. This gave me a great insight as to what the feel, look, and attitude is within a year one turnaround school, even though they are technically in their fifth year. Energy and camaraderie  gave me motivation to experience as much as I can, to be coachable with my mentor and mentor residency coach, and to deliver an exceptional teaching and learning environment for the students at Howe School of Excellence throughout the year.
